What Song are You Singing?

It is the season, this year for me it seemed to come so soon. Then again when I really sit still and think about it this year has in some ways felt like an eternity. With all the things happening in our world this year I wanted to stop and consider – What is happening right now. What are you focused on? Where is your heart? What song are you singing?

Luke 2:10-12 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Matthew 2: 1-2 2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[a] from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”

One of my absolute favorite Christmas tunes is Oh Holy Night. It was composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847. Here are the original lyrics. I love the one we sing but looking at this version, I like it so much because it really speaks to what I’m saying.

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth; Long lay the world in sin and error pining, 'Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn;

Fall on your knees, Oh hear the angel voices! O night divine! O night when Christ was born. O night, O holy night, O night divine.

Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming; With glowing hearts by his cradle we stand: So, led by light of a star sweetly gleaming, Here come the wise men from Orient land, The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger, In all our trials born to be our friend;

Fall on your knees, Oh hear the angel voices! O night divine! O night when Christ was born. O night, O holy night, O night divine.

He knows our need, To our weakness no stranger! Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend! Behold your King! Your King! Before him bend!

Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is Love and His gospel is Peace; Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother, And in his name all oppression shall cease, Sweet hymns of joy in grateful Chorus raise we; Let all within us praise his Holy name!

Fall on your knees, Oh hear the angel voices! O night divine! O night when Christ was born. O night, O holy night, O night divine.

Christ is the Lord, then ever! ever praise we! His pow'r and glory, evermore proclaim! His pow'r and glory, evermore proclaim!

I am not sure I could have put it any better than these words. It’s the song we should all be singing not just at this time of year but every day of the year. That Baby who took on our sins was with us then, is with us now and will be always. We need to be sure we don’t forget the real reason.

As for me and my family – Oh Holy Night is the song we are singing. What song are you singing?

Dear Heavenly Father – Simply asked that You help everyone out there remember that Jesus is the reason for the season. Keep Christ in Christmas – In Jesus Name - AMEN
