Twenty Years Ago

I remember where I was. I was already at work and heard someone screaming and really upset so I ran in the room to find out what was happening. I had some adrenaline rushing hard because the scream scared me that something drastic and really horrible was happening. Of course I was thinking it was happening in our building but thankfully it was not. To my horror we all went in to watch out small TV in the conference room and as we gathered around the 2nd plane hit. This day was just so beyond my wildest imagination. How can someone be so evil?

I didn’t know anyone that was injured or killed in the attack, however, it had a profound and lasting effect on me. I actually have the insert that showed a thumbprint sized photo of all the people who passed from the attack. I prayed for them, for their loved ones. It seemed like the days, weeks and months blurred but I kept praying. I needed to, I watched news coverage constantly. I found myself watching documentary after documentary about 9/11. I watched the movies that were made about the events.

I also remember one very resounding thought that kept coming back and again. We are a God fearing country and I know this will not stand with him. He, I just know, was horrified by the acts of evil planned and executed on that day. I had to put my anger away and focus on the good things that came out of this and there were so many great stories.

Deuteronomy 1:42 “But the Lord told me to tell you, ‘Do not attack, for I am not with you. If you go ahead on your own, you will be crushed by your enemies.’

This scripture made me think of 9/11 and how President Bush vowed that those who attacked us would feel our might. I believe God certainly judged them for killing so many of His children who were not to blame. These people did not deserve to die. I can certainly understand the logic behind the attack when you look at it from a “get attention” standpoint. I just don’t know how anyone can have such malice to kill so many and not a forethought of who they are and who’s they are.

We need to remember and never forget the way we, as a country, came together after this. We flew our flags and we united as a nation in the best parts of us. President Bush said so many wonderful things from ground zero on September 14, 2001– “Thank you all. I want you all to know -- it [bullhorn] can't go any louder -- I want you all to know that American today, American today is on bended knee, in prayer for the people whose lives were lost here, for the workers who work here, for the families who mourn. The nation stands with the good people of New York City and New Jersey and Connecticut as we mourn the loss of thousands of our citizens” “I can hear you! I can hear you! The rest of the world hears you! And the people -- and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon!” “to everybody who is here. Thank you for your hard work. Thank you for makin' the nation proud, and may God bless America.”

We were united in one country, one thought, on USA. Oh how I long for a time when we are all on the same page in faith, that we believe, that we know …know…know that God is real, God is good and that we can count on Him to be in our corner always. That we can do what we can to make it on earth as it is in Heaven, or as close as we can get.

Dear Heavenly Father, today I just ask that You let our voices be heard, let things happen so people who don’t see You, will notice and seek You. I also ask as the 20th anniversary comes this weekend of 9/11 that you be with the families of those injured and lost. Help them have healing and peace. Thank You – In Jesus name - AMEN
